Washington DC decriminalized medical cannabis access in 2010 when patients had to obtain a doctor’s recommendation and a govt-issued ID card to access the medical cannabis legally.
However, the council has approved emergency legalisation that will allow adults to buy medical cannabis without first consulting a doctor.
The DC Council gave its approval on Tuesday to a proposal allowing citizens to "SELF-CERTIFY" that they need medical marijuana.
What was the catch earlier, and how will this change help?
In 2010, DC legalised access to medical marijuana treatment, requiring patients to acquire recommendations from state-licensed physicians in order to legally buy marijuana products.
Additionally, the government-issued card for the use of medical marijuana costs $100 every two years.
Owners of medical marijuana dispensaries complained about this procedure and the competition from the businesses operating in the legal grey area. The issue was that these kinds of establishments "GIFT MARIJUANA" to customers who purchase products from them.
As a result, this emergency act gave DC citizens over 21 permission to sign a paper certifying they need marijuana for medicinal reasons.
The proprietor of Linda Green said of Anacostia Organics, "It is going to help us survive, and we are really happy about it."
“The reality is that there is an illicit business which is growing and thriving, and we really need to put a full stop to it.”
